What Work Is (Poems) by Philip Levine

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Absolutely Amazing!

I picked this one up for five dollars at the great downtown LA book store, The Last Bookstore.

I was buying books with National Book Award Winner stickers–I think I got four including a biography of Nabokov.

The poems range from awe inspiring brilliance to hacked “poems” written to pay the rent–historical, “American”, expansive and awesome for the most part.

The author can get hard politically when looking at oppression and intolerance, but soars on occasion when reflecting on childhood and love.

Worth reading & I will likely read more of this stuff…
