The Luzhin Defense by Vladimir Nabokov, Michael Scammell (Translator)

The Luzhin DefenseThe Luzhin Defense by Vladimir Nabokov
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is without a doubt one of the all time great novels. An amazing tale of modern living that is so damn timeless it is scary–I have no idea how Nabokov did this–pure magic.

The Chess backdrop is gold, but the childhood stuff if forever diamond and beyond compare. The turn, the twist, the descent–just amazing.

Every single character could walk out of this book and into just about any other 20th century novel–they are so well sketched and drawn and detailed. Amazing.

If you have not read this seriously, but it on your list now–it is really really good.
