Hexagram 31: HSIEN

INFLUENCE (WOOING)

An influence comes.
Good fortune to those
whose hearts are correct.

The hexagram Hsien indicates the coming of an influence. This may take the form of a teaching from the Sage, an interaction with another, or a disturbing or pleasing event. In any case, there is good fortune if you meet the influence with proper thoughts and actions.

It is a good time to remember that like attracts like. If one gives expression to higher things, then one is surrounded by higher things. If one indulges in what is inferior, then one can expect to have the company of inferiors. Therefore, it is wise to cling steadily to humility, independence, gentleness, and openness.

With others, keep an open heart, free of desire, condemning no one, enjoying affinities while retaining your equanimity. With the Sage, keep a clear connection. Seek resolutely to serve as a conduit for truth and innocence and goodness.

If the influence is challenging, persevere in correctness. If it is pleasing, also persevere in correctness. Maintaining your devotion to higher things ensures success in the coming time.

FIRST LINE

The toe is in the door. It is a good time to review your attitude and correct it if necessary. Only then can success arrive unhindered.

SECOND LINE

Do not be seduced by appearances. True progress takes time, and much of the Sage’s work is done away from our view, so be patient.

THIRD LINE

Do no rush forward or allow yourself to be run over. Allow your quiet heart to lead you.

FOURTH LINE

Abandon ambitions, anxieties, and agendas. What is necessary and worthwhile arises from the stillness within.

FIFTH LINE

Adaptability is advisable. Avoid pushing or chasing others. There is no remorse if you listen carefully to the Sage.

SIXTH LINE

Express your knowledge in your conduct rather than in your words. Trust the wisdom of the Sage and allow each person to come to his own understanding.

Abandonment
of self is freedom from desire.
Freedom from desire is freedom
from distress. No this, no
that—just exquisite
emptiness.
