St. Symeon the New Theologian

“But Adam did not wish to say, “I sinned,” but said rather the

contrary of this and placed the blame for the transgression upon

God Who created everything “very good,” saying to Him, “The woman

whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I

ate.” And after him she also placed the blame upon the serpent,

and they did not wish at all to repent and, falling down before

the Lord God, beg forgiveness of Him. For this, God banished them

from Paradise, as from a royal palace, to live in this world as

exiles. At that time also He decreed that a flaming sword should

be turned and should guard the entrance into Paradise. And God did

not curse Paradise, since it was the image of the future unending

life of the eternal Kingdom of Heaven. If it were not for this

reason, it would have been fitting to curse it most of all, since

within it was performed the transgression of Adam. But God did not

do this, but cursed only the whole rest of the earth, which also

was corrupt and brought forth everything by itself; and this was

in order that Adam might not have any longer a life free from

exhausting labors and sweat…”

  1. In the same way the grace of God is preserved by the practice of the commandmentsinteresting that he does not say the 10 commandments–just the commandments.I am still very fascinated by the fact that there are 12 commandments listed. Rob said that there are like 365 negative commandments & some number (220) of positive commandments. I need to look this up as well. The general principle of this quote is awesome–the notion of the foundation & the roof are both there for what goes on in the middle. I often forget that–I focus on the extremes, the bottoms, and the tops–I need to spend more time in the middle.

  2. practice of the commandmentsI am hit by this phrase again–I am really not exactly sure how to practice the commandments. Here they are again:1. I am the Lord your God2. You shall have no other gods before Me3. You shall not make for yourself an idol4. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God5. Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy6. Honor your father and your mother 7. You shall not murder.8. You shall not commit adultery9. You shall not steal10. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor11. You shall not covet your neighbor\’s wife12. You shall not covet your neighbor\’s house

  3. help to any living creature.I really like the idea that we are here to help any living creature, not just man.
