St. Isaac of Syria, The Ascetical Homilies.I

The Lord’s Day is a mystery of the knowledge of the truth that is
not received by flesh and blood, and it transcends speculations.
In this age there is no eighth day, nor is there a true Sabbath.
For he who said that `God rested on the seventh day,’ signified
the rest [of our nature] from the course of this life, since the
grave is also of a bodily nature and belongs to this world. Six
days are accomplished in the husbandry of life by means of keeping
the commandments; the seventh is spent entirely in the grave; and
the eighth is the departure from it.

I am again not to sure about this one. We seem to be taking a literal interpretation on a metaphorical writing. And the reading that we are doing, our interpretation is in turn metaphorical. The notion that there are more then 7 days is a mystery. Day eight does not seem to exist. Also, the belief that we do not have a true day 7, because the rest is the death–more then the death in this life, but the eternal death from which God will raise all sinners. Or something.I am still very much working on this….

a mystery of the knowledge of the truth that is not received by flesh and bloodI am not sure that I believe that there is knowledge of the truth that is not received by the body. I think that the body is the only way to experience truth. I am not sure that I believe in a truth that cannot be bodily experienced. Some kind of universal truth that is true outside of human experience–a truth value that can be assigned outside of human experience.

transcends speculationsThe notion that there are events that are greater then any speculation is fantastic. I really relate to this notion that any thoughts I have about the future are going to limit it to the point that the actual event will always be greater.

husbandry of life by means of keeping the commandmentsI am really starting to focus on the husbandry of life. On what being a husband means. On how ones life can be shaped and guided, steered.I am not sure what the commandments are so I looked them up:#begin from wikipedia1Then God spoke all these words: 2I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall have no other gods before me. 4You shall not make for yourself an image, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. 8Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. 12Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13You shall not murder. 14You shall not commit adultery. 15You shall not steal. 16You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.#end
