  • 6. Opinions and Prejudices

    Neither Heaven nor Earth have opinions;
    for everything is natural.
    The wise one knows no prejudice;
    each person is sacred.

    The Tao is like a bellows–
    though containing nothing solid,
    it does not collapse;
    and the more it is set in motion,
    the more it produces.

  • 28. Benevolence

    Benevolence is effortless.
    Effort lacks spontaneity.
    That which is spontaneous is true.
    That which is studied is unreal.

    Benevolence cannot pretend to be real.
    The pretender acts, and thus deceives.

    Thus it transpires:
    When benevolence is lost, justice ensues;
    when justice is lost, expediency follows.
    Expediency, being the mere shadow
    of what is true, portends confusion.

    Superficiality is phony
    and the fool makes use of it.
    The wise one stands on that which is solid
    and will not lean upon a shadow.

  • 16. Going Home

    Having emptied yourself of everything,
    remain where you are.

    After blossoming for a while,
    everything dies and rots.
    Going back to one’s origin is going home;
    it is giving oneself over to that which is.

    Giving oneself over to that which is, is naturla.
    That which is natural is divine;
    and that which is divine, unfathomable.
    Being unfathomable, one is of Tao.

    Being of Tao, one endures for ever;
    though the body perishes, one suffers not.
