  • Uncanny X-Men #539

    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Penciller: Ibraim Roberson
    Penciller (cover): Simone Bianchi
    Orig. Published: June 29, 2011

I bought this at Alakazam. I read it at home. I liked this issue more then I should have.

I am still very interested in Hope. I really did like the original story & most of her history is kind of somewhat logical to me. I like her powers. I like her personality when it comes out. I don’t like Logan, but I love the reason that Logan does not like Hope–he does not want to get close to her because he may be called on to kill her.

    That is great.

That is the kind of writing I have been waiting for in this book.

The silly shopping trip. The ease with which she is captured. Lame.

    The rescue. Awesome.

And the villain–who I have not heard from in YEARS and his reflections on M-Day and all of the rest of it–all of it works really well.

    The artwork, especially the cover–FANTASTIC.

Clearly this team has what it takes to fire on all clyanders every single time–this issue moves us closer [we are still not there], but a great move in the right direction.

  • Uncanny X-Men #538

    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Penciller (cover): Terry Dodson
    Orig. Published: June 15, 2011

I picked this up at Alakazam. I read it at Peet’s while Kate was in dance class. The Z-Pizza went out of business.

This is the end of the Breakworld thing & it could not have come soon enough–a lame story reviewing a lame story that did nothing but return Kitty to her past with no obvious character growth & further made me hate Wolverine.

I don’t know what the purpose of this is or was & I am not sure I like the direction that it is going in. The completion of the arc. The musings on humanity. All of the rest of it. They are OK, but I still want *different* stories in this book–I want heroic tales that matter, not trivial regurgitated meanderings that strive for spiritual significance at the end.

We have a better team on this book & we can do better!

  • Uncanny X-Men (1963) #537

    Writer: Kieron Gillen
    Penciller: Terry Dodson

The Story: (hide) Breaking Point Part 3 (of 4) What can one alien do with a single knife on an island packed full of some of the most powerful mutants on Earth? Anything he wants — as long as none of them are awake. Revenge runs red and debts are bloodily settled as BREAKING POINT approaches its climax.

I picked this up at Alakazam. I read it at Peets by UCI on a Friday after attending Reggae Day.

It was a great afternoon and that likely helped my enjoyment of this comic which felt like a bit of a throw back X-Men issue to me. I had been very upset by Magneto being depicted as a chump in the last issue and here we again see one man fairly trounce most of the X-Men. Of course, Wolverine is not defeated, which just further cements the lameness in my mind. The end was strong, but it felt like this issue and the last could have been combined and moved this story off the front burner faster–there is so much other good stuff going on around this story that I really wish it would just end.

The origin of Fell’s Four is so huge, it’s grown to two issues! While stranded in the Feywild, Adric recounts for Tisha how Fell’s Four was born—and almost died the very same day. Join us as John Rogers brings us a new chapter in these thrilling adventures of swords and sorcery.

I bought this at Alakazam. I read it at Peets.

Jack and I are still very much enjoying this book. I did not think that the art was as good as it had been, but the fun adventure spirit of this book is still very much alive.

I will leave this on my pull list.

  • Avengers #12.1

    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Penciller: Bryan Hitch
    Orig. Published: April 27, 2011
The Story: (hide) START READING with this Point One Issue! Prepare for the upcoming high-stakes Avengers event with a battle between the Avengers and the Intelligencia, the return of SWORD, and the dissapearance of Spider-Woman!. Bendis and modern master Bryan Hitch Join forces for this very special, all-new Avengers story that is not only an explosive action-packed self-contained thriller but a prologue to an Avengers saga that will rock the entire Marvel Universe next year. Guest starring the New and Secret Avengers!

I picked this up at Alakazam. I read it at Water Polo in El Toro.

I am really not sure what to make of this.

The art is my first issue–I mean this is one of Marvel’s flagship books, right? the art is just not up to par in my opinion. Formulaic and not really impressive or memorable in any real way–kid has talent, but needs to start taking more risks with paneling for sure.

The story focuses on Spider-Women. I cannot think of a character I care less about in the entire Marvel Universe.

The bad guys are AWESOME, but why they are doing this is completely ignored. Additinoally, the bad guys are fairly clueless and unfocued for such super stars. Amazingly disappointed with this, if we had them act up to their potential this comic may have had something.

And the return of Ultron? Really? Again? Didn’t this Avengers Team start with Ultron? Seems repetitive & not really designed to take the characters anywhere that I am interested to go.

With the Avengers, I am evidently mildly amused when it is great & out raged when it is ok…very strange….

  • Avengers #12

    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Penciller (cover): John Romita Jr.
    Orig. Published: April 20, 2011
The Story: (hide) The startling conclusion to the Infinity Gauntlet arc takes the Avengers into the heart of the cosmic universe and reveals an all-new cosmic entity. Who will wield the Gauntlet and what price will they pay for choosing to do so? Also, Iron Man has betrayed the team and will now have to pay the price!! Another blockbuster chapter of Marvel’s number one ongoing series by Bendis and Romita!! PLUS: Another chapter of the oral history of the Avengers!

I picked this up for Jack at Alakazam. I read it pool side during Waterpolo.

Another fun issue. I think this is the one with Dr Strange pretending to be Thanos, which is awesome. I really like Dr Strange and would like to see more of him.

I liked that the story was actually finished & that Captain America was co-opted into the conspiracy–I hope that comes back and bites him sooner rather then later!

Fans seem to feel that this arc kind of fizzled out & I am not so sure, but I am not really sure what I am supposed to expect from a book that has never ever wowed me & I am not sure how it would…

  • Avengers #11

    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Penciller: John Romita Jr.
    Orig. Published: March 30, 2011
The Story: (hide) The Infinity Gauntlet is in the hands of the most dangerous human being on the planet. But what can the Avengers do against a power greater than anything known on Earth? Another explosive chapter in this epic Avengers event by Bendis and Romita Jr. featuring the debut of a brand-new cosmic character that you won’t want to miss!! Plus: another illustrated chapter of the oral history of the Avengers!

I picked this up for Jack at Alakazam. I read it at the Waterpolo Match in El Toro.

Another fun book, basically more of the same–the characters are not really moving around all that much, and I would seriously thin this team as soon as possible. I do like the Avenger History at the end of each issue–and this was was of a period that I have very little memory of, so that was fun.

A good clean fun book that could be a lot more but is fine for what it is.

  • Avengers #10

    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
    Penciller: John Romita Jr.
    Artist: John Romita Jr
    Orig. Published: February 23, 2011
The Story: (hide) The Infinity Gauntlet is back! And no power on the Earth can stop it! It is sentences like these that made Stan Lee invent the phrase: ‘Nuff Said!! Another pulse-pounding, Earth-shattering chapter from Marvel’s blockbuster superteam of Bendis and Romita Jr! Plus: Another illustrated chapter of the oral history of the Avengers!

I picked this up for Jack on a slow week at Alakazam. He had mentioned that he was missing the Avengers & I had stopped picking it up when Cap & Iron Man moved away from the Heroic Age–issue 6 maybe.

In any event, this was a fun old school issue. Lots of Heroes running around doing heroic things. A well defined bad guy. Clear art. Nothing special, but a fun read.

  • Uncanny X-Force #9

    The return of Opena!

I picked this book up at Alakazam on Free Comic Book day with Jack and Kate.

I read it at home on the couch a few days later.

I loved the Art. They layout was first rate–the best I have seen for this book.

Magento’s arrival was welcome–he is a killer. Wolverine’s actions will land him dead or in jail, which is a very good thing. I predict that this is the one that will see the end of his involvement in this team–hopefully, Hope will take his place.

It will good to see Logan gone–he really has no place on this team.

Still my favorite book coming out these days.

  • Uncanny X-Force #8

I picked this issue up on Free comics day with Jack & Kate. I read it a few days later at home on the couch. I waited a few days to really enjoy it.

And it was worth the wait! Another great issue of my currently favorite book saw the return of Shadow King. In Remender’s hands he returns to the awesome power levels I missed the last few times I saw him.

A very good psionic battle. Another excellent closing of the issue.

Lots of awesome art by Billy Tan [who appears for the first time in this run & I would like to see more of].
