The modern world, which denies personal guilt and has no place for personal repentance but only public reforms, has divorced Christ from His Cross; the Bridegroom and Bride have been pulled apart. What God has joined together, men have torn asunder.

The new atheism is not of the intellect but of the will; it is an act of free and eager rejection of morality and its demands. It starts with the affirmation of self and the denial of the moral law.

We begin to act differently when we recognize the immensity of our possibilities.

Contentment is not inconsistent with our endeavor to have our condition improved. We do everything we can as if all depended on us, but we trust in God as if everything depended on him.

A marvelous peace comes into the soul if all trials and disappointments, sorrows, and pains are accepted either as deserved chastisement for our sins or as a healthful discipline that will lead us to greater virtue.

There is a world of difference between submitting to the Divine Will from sullenness and submitting to it knowing that God is Supreme Wisdom and that someday we will know all that happened for the best.

Before undertaking a task, great or small, making decisions, and beginning a journey, the humble will acknowledge their dependence on God and invoke His guidance and blessing on all their enterprises.

By finding others who apparently are more evil than we, we falsely believe that we are somehow better “than the rest of men” (Luke 18:11). It used to be that the most famous biographies were stories about the lives of good mean and women worthy of our imitation, rather than the recounting of scandals for the sake of making us believe we are more virtuous than we really are.

We cannot get real satisfaction out of our work unless we pause, frequently, to ask ourselves why we are doing it, and whether its purpose is one (of which) our minds wholeheartedly approve.

Only in true solitariness is true spirituality born when the soul stands naked before its God.
