Lost Birds: A Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito Novel by Anne HillermanMy rating: 3 of 5 stars Trigger warning for adoption. And Native American. And Women. And Gambling. And Alcoholism. And Mental Health. And Mothers. I guess. I mean I am not a mystery, or who done-its, reader and I found this book rather difficult. The touchstone emotional space is all very traditional family, but the challanges are all super heavy and dealt with rather shallowly. I do not know what I was hoping for, maybe a more creative less self aware book. Maybe insight into the human condition that was not obvious. Something. The book was a fine easy summer read, but not much to recommend. Read Proust. View all my reviews |
The Alienist by Caleb CarrMy rating: 3 of 5 stars I really liked the start–the strangely integration of reality and fiction, the history of psychology, the clever setting, it was awesome. Things slowed down as we moved into traditional mystery detective space with the incumbent relationship focus. But over all a fun summer read. View all my reviews |

Evidently what happens in Vegas really does stay in Vegas.
Alphabetical Diaries by Sheila HetiMy rating: 5 of 5 stars A completely fantastic book–I am not sure I have ever found a book that more accurately represents how I think. The social anxiety, the name dropping, the sex, the literary references, the work ethic, this book just has it all–fantastic and a fast read. I strongly recommend it. View all my reviews |
