Wolf in White Van by John DarnielleMy rating: 5 of 5 stars This book is great. Dark, but really great. It is hard to describe why it is so great–the high school escapist fantasy is solid, but there is some really good inner dialog that people should check out. A quick and easy suicide read. I really wanted to love this book, but it comes off as a little two action adventurer without China’s normal obtuse weirdness which I love so much. There is great vocabulary–I learned 15 new words–and some interesting ideas, but it never really comes together and packs the kind of mind bending punch that I have come to expect from my favorite British communist. Worth reading, I guess. It is likely true that my hopes got in the way–still very excited about China’s next one!

The idea of this book is fantasy. The execution is brutal—poorly written is an understatement. Just as all code needs review, all books need an editor. Disappointed.

I love this book. The art is amazing. The approach is gentle. The Jung is rock solid. I feel like I have given away five copies and will continue to promote this for years. Seriously. Thank you for publishing this.

I did not love this. I feel like it was simple humor focused on interesting topics. There is a book that starts with the gun instead of the dildo and is a lot better. I mostly just did not dig the tone of this, but folks in my book club it liked it much more then I did.

I liked this a lot more then the reviews would have had me think. It is a very innovative text with a lot of literary diversity and solid writing. It is true that this book was assembled by another sadist from sanford who has likely done more harm to undergraduates then phentonyl, but unlike most of his fascist coworkers I do not sense that he enjoyed it. A good book.

Trigger warning for adoption. And Native American. And Women. And Gambling. And Alcoholism. And Mental Health. And Mothers. I guess.
I mean I am not a mystery, or who done-its, reader and I found this book rather difficult. The touchstone emotional space is all very traditional family, but the challanges are all super heavy and dealt with rather shallowly. I do not know what I was hoping for, maybe a more creative less self aware book. Maybe insight into the human condition that was not obvious. Something. The book was a fine easy summer read, but not much to recommend. Read Proust.

I really liked the start–the strangely integration of reality and fiction, the history of psychology, the clever setting, it was awesome. Things slowed down as we moved into traditional mystery detective space with the incumbent relationship focus. But over all a fun summer read.

A completely fantastic book–I am not sure I have ever found a book that more accurately represents how I think. The social anxiety, the name dropping, the sex, the literary references, the work ethic, this book just has it all–fantastic and a fast read. I strongly recommend it.
