  • Ghosts

    Ella Wheeler Wilcox

There are ghosts in the room.
As I sit here alone, from the dark corners there
They come out of the gloom,
And they stand at my side and they lean on my chair

        There’s a ghost of a Hope
That lighted my days with a fanciful glow,
In her hand is the rope
That strangled her life out. Hope was slain long ago.

        But her ghost comes to-night
With its skeleton face and expressionless eyes,
And it stands in the light,
And mocks me, and jeers me with sobs and with sighs.

There’s the ghost of a Joy,
A frail, fragile thing, and I prized it too much,
    And the hands that destroy
Clasped its close, and it died at the withering touch.

There’s the ghost of a Love,
Born with joy, reared with hope, died in pain and unrest,
    But he towers above
All the others—this ghost; yet a ghost at the best,

        I am weary, and fain
Would forget all these dead: but the gibbering host
    Make my struggle in vain—
In each shadowy corner there lurketh a ghost

  • For this week’s reading, I drew the Empress.

The Empress sits surrounded by symbols of abundance. The Empress is a symbol of creation, the giver of life. The Fool has decided what he is going to create with the tools he has at his disposal, and is forging forward with the glimpse of reality and success at the back of his mind. The Empress reminds him that (just like newly planted grain) new creations are fragile and need require patience and nurturing. Love is the only way to guarantee fruition.

Sometimes, this card can signify the dark side of a mother, her possessive and jealously energies.

Traditionally associated with strong maternal and feminine influences, the presence of the Empress is excellent news if you are looking for harmony in your marriage or hoping to start a family. Any artistic endeavors you are currently associated with are also likely to be more successful, as this card often finds those exposed to strong bursts of creative abundance or artistic energy. That creative energy may not be in the form of a painting or art project, however: This card also suggests a very strong possibility of pregnancy — not necessarily yours, but you might be seeing a new addition to your extended family or the family of a close friend in the near future! You need patience, which will lead to your fulfillment.

  • This week we are guided by Justice

A woman sits between two pillars, holding scales in one hand and an upraised sword in the other. The Fool is searching for another way, another goal and motivation for his life. He needs the judgment of someone wise and fair.

This card indicates that sometimes justice might appear to be unfair and cold, but it restores a sense of reason and creates a natural balance.

Justice can be a literal representation of justice or law, and it is a very good card to find in your spread if you have acted with kindness and fairness towards others and, especially, if you have been a victim. It is a significant indicator of fairness and a positive resolution, although how and what sort will depend on your own experiences. If you have been unfair, abusive, or otherwise shady and immoral in your dealings, though, pay heed. For the unjust, this card is, at best, a dire warning to change your ways before retribution falls upon you, and, at worst, a simple statement that it is already too late. In neutral cases, it may simply be telling you to seek out balance in your life.
