The Cool School

I got this on Netflix instant view. I watched it mostly at Jack’s water polo practice at the Woollett Center. It was a great movie about the history of the Ferus Gallery.

Big time beatnik LA art stuff–fun images of Venice, lots of ‘lost it when the money came in’ message [which someone in the film actually responds to in a very interesting way–‘we were working on our thing, this group originally helped with that, but in the end we had to go figure it out on our own’].

Lots of neat information on the gallery owners and the currators and the attempts that were made for LACMA to be more inclusive of local and modern art. Really a fun over view of an important period of art–lots of assemblage and pop art is included.

One thing that does feel wrong is the New York vs LA thing–they have a New York art snob come on and periodically mock LA art, which just does not feel healthy in a film about underdogs coming out on top.
